Shanghai's airport has handled over 200,000 inbound and outbound trips made by visa-free travelers from China and Singapore since the two countries enforced 30-day mutual visa exemption agreement on February 9.
According to the agreement, Chinese and Singaporean citizens holding ordinary passports are allowed to enter and stay in each other's countries visa-free for up to 30 days.
Over the past six days, data by Shanghai Pudong International Airport showed that the popularity of outbound travel by mainland Chinese residents to Singapore from the top eight in 2023 to the top three now, affected by the combination of visa-free policy and the Spring Festival holiday from February 10 to 17.
"In the past, it took about half a month to apply for a Singapore visa, and also I had to spend hundreds of yuan on it. Now it is visa-free and it is very convenient. So I take my family to travel to Singapore during this Spring Festival holiday," said Xie Lerong, a Chinese tourist.
Tourist from Singapore to China has also enjoyed the convenience.
"It gives us greater convenience and makes it easier for us to travel to China," said a tourist from Singapore.
While the airport authorities also reminded that some travelers still need to go through visa application procedures in advance.
"According to the agreement, citizens of the two countries can enter the each other's country without a visa to engage in family visits, business, and other personal matters. The stay cannot exceed the 30-day duration. However, if they want to go to the other country to engage in work, news reporting or other personal matters for more than 30 days, they still need to go through relevant visa procedures in advance," said Lu Mingqi, deputy head of border checkpoint under Shanghai Airport (Group) Co., Ltd.
