A container vessel named COSCO Shipping Carnation was recently refueled in Qingdao Port. What was unusual this time was that the super-sized vessel was refilled with 210 tons of methanol rather than fuel oil. As a result, carbon emissions could be reduced significantly.
An increasing number of ships powered by green energy choose to berth in Qingdao, an indication that the shipping industry is evolving from a “muscular” player to a “green, smart and efficient” player. Moreover, the most pivotal part of green energy-powered ships is the ship-borne low speed combustion engine.
Qingdao is one of important manufacturing bases for ship-borne low speed combustion engines. With a focus on the application of new green fuels, CSSC Engine Co., Ltd., which is located along Haixi Bay, has successively started to produce low speed combustion engines for LNG, methanol and ammonia fuel-powered ships, which are applicable to large and medium-sized commercial ships ranging from bulk freighters, oil tankers, container ships, chemical carriers to multipurpose vessels.
Shipowners across the globe are using dual-fuel engines made by Chinese shipyards on a massive scale to cut the cost of carbon emissions at a fast speed. In the first half of 2025, CSSC Engine Co., Ltd. delivered a total of 135 main engines and had 250 units of orders in hand. Among them, the share of green dual-fuel main engines has risen sharply from last year, and it is worth mentioning that projects pertaining to new-type fuels such as liquid ammonia and methanol are growing remarkably.
