Lingnan Cuisine | In the fifth month of Lingnan, lychees glow red as cinnabar. From afar, they shine like clusters of ruby pearls. Dense leaves gather like clouds around the fruit, red as a crane’s crown. Light rain wets the branches, making the lychees glow bright as cockscombs. Split open, their flesh is sweet as wild honey. Bite in, refreshing and luscious juice fills the mouth. Don’t fear eating too many for their famed “inner heat.” No longer are they borne in haste from Lingnan to Chang’an.
