From ruin to revelation, old factory spaces across China have been revitalized as vibrant cultural destinations for local people as part of the government's efforts in urban renewal.
In the city of Zhengzhou in central China's Henan Province, a wave of transformation has taken hold as old buildings find new life. Along Huashan Road, spanning an area of approximately six square kilometers, numerous factories once stood. Leveraging these vacant spaces and old office buildings, the local community has embarked on an endeavor to create fresh consumer experiences.
As night falls, the ModeJ Creative Park welcomes a surge of visitors. Despite being open for less than six months, the park has quickly become a popular destination among young people.
"There's a sense of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle. I quite enjoy this atmosphere," said Fan Shu, a resident of Zhengzhou.
Also breathing new life into old structures, Chengdu City in Sichuan Province has embraced cultural elements to revitalize its old blocks near the local Confucian Temple.
A range of cultural and creative spaces has been developed, including intangible cultural heritage experience halls and trendy shops. The historic district has transformed into a thriving hub for cultural industries, creating an environment conducive to living, working, and conducting business. Handicraft stores that were once hidden within the community have now become renowned hotspots for visitors from near and far.
"Now more people are aware of our traditional hand-stitching techniques. We receive daily packages from customers outside the region, such as Guangdong Province and Beijing, and our business has flourished," said Yang Yahan, owner of a clothes repairing store.
