Two iconic sci-fi directors, Guo Fan from China and Denis Villeneuve from Canada, met in Beijing on Thursday in front of a live audience to share behind-the-scenes stories from their movie productions.
At the meeting, Guo, director of the "The Wandering Earth" series, a must-see among Chinese science fiction films, and Villeneuve, director of Hollywood science fiction sequel "Dune: Part Two," talked about their experience behind the creation of their blockbusters.
Villeneuve is currently visiting China to engage with fans as his movie has kept audiences spellbound in theaters across the country since it hit cinemas starting March 8.
In anticipation of the new release, the original "Dune" was also re-screened on March 1 to refresh audience memories of the main stories and plot lines. Re-releasing the precursor helped viewers immerse themselves in the Dune world of the series as the latest chapter debuted.
Guo hailed "Dune: Part Two" and shared his thoughts after watching the movie.
"I watched the movie two weeks ago and it's very stunning. I also like 'Dune: Part One' very much. And I still feel that I'm covered in sand after watching the movie. The magnificent scenes in Dune, shot in natural environment and created by special effects, are very great. I'd like to hang a banner saying that I should learn from the director," he said.
After the success of "The Wandering Earth II," which earned over 4 billion yuan (some 555.86 million U.S. dollars) at the box office globally, Guo said he and the team are working on the third version of the sci-fi series.
"We are busy with playwriting for The Wandering Earth III and making some preparations for shooting the movie. Before doing this, we conducted a survey among young movie-goers and concluded that the interactivity and timely feedback is very important. So, we are going to take more into account the demands of young audiences. Anyway, what we do will be displayed in the cinema when the movie is put on," said Guo.
