Villages in Guizhou, the mountainous gem of China's southwest, have been capitalizing on the province's natural beauty and vibrant ethnic culture in a bid to elevate the quality of its booming tourism industry.
A new high-speed rail link connecting the province to Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the south has introduced an influx of tourism since the line was inaugurated in August.
A prime destination for many of these visitors is the ancient village of Yaoshan, near the border with Guangxi. There, breathtaking vistas and a wealth of ethnic cultural experiences await, from braving a lengthy cross-cliff footbridge to enjoying traditional drum and dance performances.
Meanwhile, the renewed tourism has been providing employment opportunities for residents.
"Transforming traditional culture into tourism services has enriched the industry, drawing in 240 thousand visitors this year," said Yang Hua, vice-manager of the Yaoshan Ancient Village Tourism Development Company.
Beyond cultural immersion, some visitors are opting for a unique view of the province's mountains and karst formations -- from hot air balloons and gliding parachutes.
However, visitors do not have to conquer a fear of heights to join the crowds of spectators who gather to watch talented villagers play basketball and football.
"Our village has been turned into a scenic hotspot with mountains converted into lush gardens and venues for outdoor sports. The influx of tourists has breathed new life into our town, providing a fresh wave of opportunities and prosperity for locals," said Wang Fan, an official in Lishu Village of Guizhou's Anlong County.
