Colorful lanterns are illuminating the streets of Singapore's iconic attractions like the Chinatown and the Gardens by the Bay, captivating local residents and foreign tourists alike, as the city state celebrates the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional holiday for family reunion.
A multitude of lantern displays, with the theme of "joint celebrations for Mid-Autumn Festival", are set up in the Chinatown, which took a local art school over half a year to complete.
The lanterns feature various festival-related designs such as rabbits and mooncakes and blessing words like "family reunion" and "blooming flowers, full moon", creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere.
The main lantern, standing more than eight meters high, portrays a couple with three children, symbolizing a harmonious and blissful family.
"Today I went with my dad, my mom and my sister to watch the lights in the Chinatown and it's really amazing. I think it's really spectacular and my favorite is the rabbit because it symbolizes my favorite sweets - Nai Bai Tang (milk candy)," said a local elementary student.
At the Gardens by the Bay, a glitzy lantern show themed "floral dream" is illuminating one of Asia's popular horticultural destinations at night. The lanterns incorporate many traditional Chinese elements, including bamboos, pavilions and lotus flowers.
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Sept 29 this year. It is celebrated on the night when the moon is at its fullest and brightest on the 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese lunar calendar.
