Giant panda pair gifted to HKSAR makes public debut 发布日期:2024/12/13 来源:International Daily 打印

A pair of giant pandas gifted by the central government to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) made their public debut on Sunday at Ocean Park Hong Kong, drawing eager crowds from across the region.

The pair, An An and Ke Ke, moved in their new home on Sept. 26 after a 30-day quarantine and a month of adaptation.
Crowds of fans were seen lining up outside the park in anticipation of the bears' first public appearance.
As spectators gathered at the glass-enclosed viewing area, the two pandas delighted the crowd by munching on bamboo shoots, lounging cozily on the wooden structure, and amusing everyone with their playful and clumsy movement.
A panda craze has gripped the HKSAR since the pair's arrival, with a range of panda-themed events being unfolded. Highlights included a panda art competition and the launch of commemorative panda stamps. Among these, the panda naming campaign garnered the most attention, with over 22,600 submissions received. After a careful selection, the names An An and Ke Ke were chosen.
The character "An" means peace in Chinese and "Ke" connotes limitless possibilities. Together the two characters form "encore," which can be interpreted as unending good fortune for Hong Kong, said the park.
In addition, the HKSAR government has announced plans for more panda-centric activities to engage the public and boost local tourism, including an outdoor carnival and a traveling panda sculpture exhibition in the coming days.
Ocean Park Hong Kong now houses six giant pandas, including the pair Le Le and Ying Ying, who arrived in the HKSAR in 2009, along with their cubs born in August.
