Swiss city of Lucerne is famous for its medieval landmarks. It is now hosting the 5th Lilu Light Festival from January 11 to 21, presenting immersive light shows to locals and tourists from around the world.
Every year in January, the darkest month of a year, the international light festival takes over the city and turns it into an enchanting land of light and music with installations created by artists from around the world.
"I'm very honored to be here and I'm happy that my surreal art, I never thought that my surreal art would go to that big surface. To make a VJ small project on a small screen, I'm doing big-scale mappings and it's amazing. Yes, it's amazing," said Kasia Pawlosky, a "Reuss" artist.
Every year, Lucerne's light festival has a different theme. In 2024, it is infinity, the universe and the beacon of light and color.
This year, 24 installations, including a giant moon - seven meters in diameter - featuring NASA images of the lunar surface, are being displayed in the city's streets, squares, churches and famous landmarks.
One of the festival's sell-out installations is a light and music show inside one of Lucerne's biggest churches, accompanied by live organ music.
"We have a call for projects in the beginning of the year and we have, I think, around about 200 artists who want to come to Lucerne. And with the jury, we discussed which installation we would like to show at Lucerne. And now we have 24 installations in Lucerne," said Thomas Fritschi, an organizer of the light festival.
The Lilu Light Festival in Lucerne is a highlight on the cultural calendar in Switzerland and beyond. Over the past five years, it has been growing in popularity among locals and international visitors.
Organizers say the festival has grown from 40,000 visitors in its first year to more than 130,000 international guests attending this year.
"It's very nice, it's beautiful," said an Italian tourist.
"I have also heard of it from the advertisements on the Internet and also in different ways. So I got the information of this festival, but today, when I came, it's way better than I expected. And the lights and the paintings on the buildings, they are very, for me, they are very exciting and very interesting," said a Chinese tourist.
