BERLIN, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Ibrahim Maza scored and set up the winner as Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to defeat Freiburg 2-1 on Sunday, ending the visitors' unbeaten Bundesliga start and seeing Patrik Schick set a new club scoring record.
Freiburg struck first in the 14th minute when Philipp Treu combined with Niklas Beste down the right before delivering a low cross for Derry Scherhant to finish from close range.
Leverkusen responded five minutes later. Following a defensive misunderstanding, Schick played Maza through, and the midfielder beat goalkeeper Mio Backhaus with a precise outside-foot finish.
Both teams maintained a high tempo but struggled to create further clear chances against disciplined defenses before halftime.
After the restart, Leverkusen showed greater attacking intent while Freiburg defended compactly, limiting the hosts to occasional half-chances.
The winner arrived in the 76th minute when Maza produced a brilliant individual run near the byline, dribbled past three defenders and cut the ball back for Schick to convert from six meters.
The Czech striker became the first Leverkusen player to score in each of the opening six Bundesliga matches of a season. Only Robert Lewandowski, who scored in the first 11 rounds of the 2019-20 season, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored in eight consecutive matches in 2015-16, have recorded longer runs.
Leverkusen could have extended its advantage, but Nathan Tella, Maza and Schick squandered late opportunities. Freiburg nearly snatched an equalizer in stoppage time when Lucas Holer headed narrowly wide from close range.
"Taking a point here would have been fine. We didn't have to lose this game. I think we played well, especially in the first half, and had plenty of control after the break," Freiburg coach Julian Schuster said.
The victory lifted Leverkusen to fourth on 13 points, level with third-placed Freiburg, which surrendered top spot after its first league defeat. Bayern Munich leads Borussia Dortmund on goal difference, with both teams on 14 points from six matches.
Elsewhere, Hoffenheim climbed to 14th with a 2-1 victory at Borussia Monchengladbach, courtesy of goals from Bambase Conte and Alexander Prass. Gladbach remains bottom without a point after six consecutive defeats, becoming only the fourth club in Bundesliga history to make such a start.
