An exhibition of nearly 800 artifacts from the Maya and Andean civilizations is drawing summer crowds to Beijing’s Capital Museum, combining rare loans from Mexico and Peru with digital displays, themed food and other visitor activities.

"Maize, Gold and Jaguar: Ancient Civilizations of the Maya and Andes" brings together objects from more than 20 museums and cultural institutions in Mexico and Peru. Many of the artifacts are being shown in Beijing for the first time, and the museum said the exhibition is drawing around 3,000 visitors a day.

"We're the second time here in Beijing. This exhibition here is about Maya [and Andean], and it's really nice and interactive," said a foreign visitor.

In the exhibition's Andean gallery, visitors can view ancient gold and silver objects that illustrate the region's metalworking traditions, then use digital installations to explore how Andean communities built their homes.

"The ceiling lights and projections do more than create images. The design incorporates sound, so when visitors enter the space, they can immediately sense a culture's distinctive character," said Zhao Yazhuo, a co-curator of the exhibition.

The museum has also extended the exhibition theme to its dining areas, offering more than 20 dishes inspired by cuisines from the Americas, including tacos and beef tenderloin set meals.

"We introduced food such as tacos and beef tenderloin set meals. They have been popular with visitors, with daily sales nearing 1,000 orders and climbing above 1,500 on weekends," said Yao Yujiang, head of the museum’s security and technology department.

Outside the galleries, public spaces feature cultural references to the Americas, hands-on activities, photo spots, a themed market and virtual-reality experiences.

"It is immersive. You can view the exhibits, try the activities, taste the food and make things by hand. That kind of multi-sensory experience leaves a much deeper impression," said a visitor.

The museum has also partnered with more than 40 local attractions and businesses, including zoos, botanical gardens and shopping malls, to offer ticket-based discounts.
