Colombian artist Fernando Botero's exaggerated art forms captivate visitors in Guangzhou 2025/8/3 source: International Daily Print

Renowned Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero's "Great Art Exhibition" recently opened at the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong Province, drawing many Latin American art enthusiasts.

The exhibition showcases more than 80 representative works by Botero, including oil paintings and his distinctive sculptures, offering a comprehensive insight into the social landscape and humanistic spirit of Latin America.
Botero is one of the most globally recognized artists of the modern era, and is regarded as one of Colombia's national treasures.
He developed a signature style known as Boterismo, defined by the depiction of figures with exaggerated proportions and voluptuous forms. The enlarged proportions are not just an aesthetic choice, but a conceptual tool to invite introspection, critique, and reflection.
"Botero's artistic language is very personal and has a unique style. He knew exactly what he's doing and then kept presenting this visual language," one visitor said while viewing Botero's works at the museum.
"I think we can understand Botero from several perspectives. First, we can observe the development and evolution of international artistic trends in the modern era from the perspective of art history. Second, we can analyze the exhibition from the perspective of artistic style, such as exaggerated forms and passionate expression of colors. This is the spiritual and artistic wealth that a deceased artist bequeaths to humanity," noted Wang Shaoqiang, curator of the Guangdong Museum of Art.
This is the first time that Botero's works are exhibited in southern China.
The exhibition will run until Nov 23 this year.
