Despite being a traditionally slow season, Qingdao recorded a strong surge in international visitors during the first quarter of this year.
According to data from Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport, the city welcomed over 164,000 foreign arrivals from January to March, a year-on-year increase of 52.6 percent. South Korea remained the largest source market with 114,000 visitors, while Thailand led among Southeast Asian countries.
The influx of international travelers has translated into stronger consumer spending. From local delicacies like oysters and Tsingtao beer to visits to shopping malls and bathhouses, visitors are leaving with fond memories.
Thai tourists, in particular, are drawn to Qingdao's cool spring weather and blooming flowers. "Thailand is too hot right now. Qingdao offers a refreshing escape, and the blossoms are beautiful," said a Thai visitor taking photos in front of a traditional courtyard building.
Meanwhile, South Korean tourists have expanded their itineraries beyond classic sightseeing. Local bathhouses, foot massage parlors, and traditional markets have become must-try experiences. A foot massage chain in Licang district reported a notable increase in South Korean customers. Shopping malls also saw a boost from the unexpected foot traffic.
The surge is fueled by optimized visa-free transit policies, but Qingdao's unique charm plays a key role as well. Social media influencers have popularized spots like Shazikou's blue-sky coastline and Longkou Road's anime-style cartoon street, which are now dream destinations for young Thais. For South Koreans, Qingdao has become a top family travel choice, ranking second only to Shanghai on the popular South Korean search portal Naver.
With more immersive consumption opportunities and a growing number of duty-free refund stores, Qingdao is poised to see even stronger international tourism in the future. The city is turning its "overnight popularity" into long-term economic momentum.
