The "Beicha 36" tea variety, native to Haiqing town in the Qingdao West Coast New Area, was recently included in the province's list of recommended tea varieties. This significant milestone marks two decades of dedicated scientific cultivation in the regional tea industry.
Developed through collaboration between Haiqing town, agricultural experts, and university research teams, "Beicha 36" is noted for its vibrant green shoots throughout the spring, summer, and autumn. This feature makes it the province's first high-quality raw material specifically ideal for premium matcha production.
In addition to its color, the variety is known for its exceptional resilience, particularly its frost resistance, allowing it to thrive in northern China's challenging climate.
The economic benefits of "Beicha 36" have transformed local farming. With robust buds and a 30 percent higher yield than traditional local varieties, it significantly enhances productivity.
Moreover, its uniform growth and optimal internode length address the ongoing industry challenge of mechanized harvesting, reducing labor costs for large-scale operations.
Currently, Haiqing town manages 35,000 mu (2,333 hectares) of tea gardens and over 200 enterprises, producing 1,300 metric tons of dry tea annually, with a total value over 370 million yuan ($53 million).
The official endorsement of "Beicha 36" is expected to further elevate the Haiqing Tea brand — a nationally protected geographical indication — and promote sustainable growth for the region's tea farmers.
