In the first half of this year, Qingdao Shipyard Co., Ltd. and Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. delivered a combined total of 12 ships. A continuous stream of new orders are pouring in while the two companies are busy with new construction starts, docking, undocking, trial voyages and delivery. As international shipowners from Belgium, Norway, Greece, etc. have contracted with Qingdao’s shipbuilders for making green ships, orders on hand of the two top shipbuilders cannot be finished until 2028.

Data from Qingdao Shipyard Co., Ltd. and Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. show that the shipbuilding sector in Qingdao is flooded with orders. To be specific, the former in the first half of 2024 delivered three ships, started building four ships, and received a number of high-value-added orders including the world’s first ammonia fuel-powered container vessel, a 210,000-tonnage bulk carrier and a 6,400-tonnage refrigerated cargo ship, etc, having a record number of orders on hand and achieving a further rise in output from the year before. The latter, which in the first half of this year delivered nine ships, and received new orders involving 21 ships, including a 210,000-tonnage bulk carrier, now boasts orders on hand comprising 68 ships, which involve a total deadweight tonnage of over 13 million.

High-value-added and clean energy-powered bulk carriers and container vessels dominate the types of ships exported by Qingdao, whose buyers include prestigious shipowners at home and abroad such as CMA CGM in France and CMB in Belgium. There are some bright spots about the new orders. It is noteworthy is that Qingdao Shipyard Co., Ltd. is contracted to make the world’s first ammonia fuel-powered container vessel, marking that the cause of carbon emission reduction in the shipping industry has ushered into the “ammonia era”.  (Zhou Xiaofeng)
