The qipao was once a standard of modernity with its high neck and slit skirt and was a favorite dress among Chinese women in the mid-20th century and as a symbol of China around the world.
Nowadays, it's no longer a common sight on the streets as it is mostly reserved for weddings and special occasions; however, designer Wang Xiaorou is updating the qipao with bold prints and bolder colors.
"A common misconception about the qipao today is that it is old-fashioned and out of style. Only people of a certain age can fully bring out the elegance of the dress. But truth be told, the qipao comes in all sorts of styles. Just like us, we are multifaceted and three-dimensional so when I choose the fabrics for qipao, I like bold colors and loud prints. These modern elements do well in balancing the traditional design of the qipao. Giving it a street style touch or turning it into a professional dress that's good for work," she said.
The designer's studio Musee R is now widely acknowledged among customers, and whatever the future of fashion holds for the qipao, she is refashioning the garment to fit our daily lives.
