No roadblocks for elephant trip to Oklahoma City Zoo
SEATTLE (AP) — Asian elephants Bamboo and Chai are bound for Oklahoma City Zoo following failed attempts to stop their journey in federal court and the city council.
The Seattle Times reports (http://is.gd/WTwqFx ) that the Seattle City Council on Monday voted down a proposal from Councilmember Kshama Sawant that would have rerouted the elephants to an animal sanctuary.
Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo shipped out 48-year-old Bamboo and 36-year-old Chai last week, just hours after winning a court decision allowing them to send the elephants to another zoo.
Sawant tried to pass an ordinance that would place the elephants in a California sanctuary, as activists have proposed.
The elephants are being held at San Diego Zoo after encountering bad weather on the journey east, but they are still under the custody of Seattle's zoo.
