The 2022 World Intelligent Driving Challenge (WIDC) was held in north China's Tianjin Municipality on Saturday, and China has achieved significant technological progress in the research and development of intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs).A record number of 145 teams have participated in the Intelligent Driving Challenge, contesting for four challenging events in terms of intelligent networking, information security, intelligent driving simulation and dual intelligence integration, a competition of various vehicle intelligent systems which were jointly produced by both automobile and Internet enterprises. The event was going on both online and offline, and various innovative testing technologies have been manifested in the online sector."For example, the information security challenge adopted the form of interconnection which combined virtual scenes and reality around the actual vehicle testing site. And the intelligent driving simulation competition introduced the world's top intelligent driving simulation test platform for the first time in China, which can build high-precision simulation conditions," said Gu Hongjian, deputy secretary general of the WIDC Organizing Committee. In the offline competition, the intelligent driving system also operated in a stable manner against simulated severe weather conditions and complex environment.Moving at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour, test vehicles successfully identified the dummy crossing ahead in simulated rain and fog, and implemented automatic emergency braking in time to avoid collisions. In the dual intelligence integration competition, the intelligent system can have dialogues with users continuously when testing voice interaction, and it can also serve as the digital key for controlling the vehicle with mobile phone. In addition, Internet companies have also strengthened the user privacy protection capabilities of intelligent networked vehicles by virtue of their technological advantages.Experts held the 2022 WIDC is a centralized inspection of the entire industrial chain of ICVs, as its complete testing content has covered the full industrial cycle of the field, and China has made obvious technological progress."We can see that ICVs have achieved great advancement in key technology level and industrialization. Significant progress has been made in vehicle integration, core technologies and industrialization, and [the development of] key technologies have maintained the same pace of ICVs' industrialization," said Liu Yuguang, senior technical director of the China Automotive Technology and Research Center.
