Beijing meets five-year
afforestation target ahead of schedule

Beijing has completed the greening project of more than 66,000-hectare-ecological afforestation with cityscape and countryside views.The capital city launched a five-year One Million-Mu (about 66,667 hectares) Plain Afforestation Project in 2017, aiming to add One Million-Mu of forestation in Beijing by the end of 2022.With 8,800 more hectares vegetation planted this spring, Beijing has managed to plant 67,200 hectares of forestation so far, about half a year ahead of schedule.In plain areas, 30 green places with over 660 hectares and 260 green places with over 66 hectares have been built. In hillside areas, nearly 31,000 hectares of green spaces have been restored.In the past five years, the city has built 216 leisure parks, 56 urban forests, 510 small and micro green spaces and small parks, and more than 1,000 parks of all kinds. The coverage rate of parks within 500-meter-radius has reached 87 percent.Between 2012 and 2015, Beijing City implemented the One Million-Mu Plain Afforestation Project, which has led to over 50 million trees being planted in the city’s plain area and a 10 percent increase of overall forest cover. After two rounds of afforestation project for the two consecutive five years, the city has built 135,000 more hectares of afforestation.
