Keepers at a zoo in southwest China's Sichuan Province have come up with various ways to help their animals beat the heat as temperatures in the region are rising. At the zoo in Sichuan's Panzhihua City, keepers are shearing alpacas to help them cope with hot weather. While the animals might look quite undignified with their new haircuts, it helps them stay cool in the soaring temperatures and prevents parasites from taking up residence in their normally thick fleeces."It is getting hot. The alpacas' fleece is too thick. Flies occasionally lay eggs on their fleece, which is bad for their skin. So we need to shear off some fleece to help them cope with the heat and make them more comfortable in summer," said Ding Xinglin, senior veterinarian at the zoo.Meanwhile, the zoo’s black bears are making full use of the pool in their enclosure to freshen up, while other animals are enjoying a cooling water spray set up by zoo keepers."We need to increase humidity in the aviary. For bears, they like taking bath, so we need to keep the bath water clean. We also need to ramp up the supply of fruits and vegetables in summer," said Ding. There are over 100 animals in the Panzhihua zoo, and keepers have also formulated special menus to help them stay cool and healthy as the summer begins to sizzle.
