Qingdao’s captivating views that have appeared in the TV series and the film, including the Eight Great Passes, Zhongshan Road, Coral Bridge, Laoshan Mountain Scenic Spot and Cross-sea Bridge, quickly go viral on the internet. The audience are all impressed by the diversified architectural aesthetics and cultural charm of Qingdao as a shooting location and exclaim: Qingdao is indeed the most beautiful “natural film studio”.
One third Chinese films are shot in Qingdao
Peaceful, secluded and elegant European-style courtyards, old mottled and rolling limestone pavements, leisurely and undistributed civil life, exceptional geographical conditions and all-embracing quality make the city gradually become a recognized studio in the film circle. Statistics of the National Radio Television Administration indicate that one third films and TV series released every year have found a view to photograph in Qingdao. Since the establishment of Qingdao over 100 years ago, over 2,000 films have been shot in Qingdao.
In fact, Qingdao is always a popular shooting location since the first prime time of Chinese film industry in the 1930s. Beautiful scenery of Qingdao can be seen in the earliest classical Chinese films including Elegant and Talented Sons and Daughters, Down-trodden Peach Blossom, Return to Nature and Waves Washing the Sand.
Insiders in the TV and film industry think Qingdao boasts the most striking architectural complex in the world, a large number of courtyard-style detached villas, unique streets and alleys and perfect integration of Chinese and western culture. These elements and the passage of time have created non-copyable landscapes.
Qingdao-born professionals propel forward the film and TV rush in Qingdao
The city of Qingdao gives birth to film and TV talented people from generation to generation. Over the years, Qingdao has continuously boosted the development of the film and TV industry, built a world-class “city of film” and provided the first-class infrastructure and supporting policies. Both domestic and international first-class production teams, directors, actors or actresses and scriptwriters have gathered in Qingdao.
As the new generation of film and TV stars including Huang Bo and Huang Xiaoming, are well-received, film fans gradually regard Qingdao as a “holy land” of film and TV. In recent years, Qingdao-themed films and TV dramas, including CEO, Tiny Dust, True Love, Kidnapping in Qingdao and Racecourse, has presented Qingdao in different periods to the audience. Qingdao-born litterateurs, playwrights, actors or actresses and directors write about Qingdao and make performance about Qingdao in succession, which not only fulfills the need of Qingdao native audience, but also serves as a means to advertise and present Qingdao.
The “city of film” rises
In the process of Chinese film industrialization, updated science and technology as well as upgraded wisdom cannot go without the integration of technology and art. Notably, the Oriental Movie Metropolis in the West Coast New Area of Qingdao plays a significant role.
Qingdao has devoted a lot to building the “city of film” in recent years. The Oriental Movie Metropolis, which has risen step by step, boasts 40 globally advanced film studios which have been completed and put into operation as well as the largest single standard studio and underwater studio in the world with an area of 10,000 square meters which has been sought after by several big-budget productions. In the past years, phenomenal blockbusters including The Wandering Earth and Crazy Alien were produced in the Sunac Film Metropolis, where Creation of the Gods set up a shooting location as big as 40 football courts.
Nowadays, Qingdao is able to shoot costume drams and time series in exteriors, fashion series and metropolitan dramas with the aid of its modern cityscape as well as fantasy series and science fiction shows by taking advantage the facilities of the Oriental Movie Metropolis. The success of the TV series “ Roving Inspection Team” is attributable to both fine coastal views and profession film and TV shooting service of Qingdao as a “natural film studio”.
In addition, the West Coast New Area has guaranteed one-stop film and TV production services, set up a think tank of film and TV experts and established a resource pool of shooting locations and service providers. All the efforts make films and TV dramas that are shot in Qingdao continuously clinch high ratings and successful box office. It fully demonstrates that film and TV services in Qingdao characterized by the integration of beautiful scenery and professionalism are more attractive than the name “natural film studio”.
