In the 21st China Patent Award (Industrial Design) Presenting Ceremony held in Wuxi on November 14, the Flying Dragon locomotive patent of Fuxing CR400AF EMU named “Locomotive Rail Vehicle (2014-3)”, developed by the CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd., obtained the gold award of Chinese industrial design, the highest honor of the China Patent Award.

The China Patent Award, co-organized by the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) and the World Intellectual Property Organization, is the only governmental award for patent as well as the highest honor for patent in China.

The “Flying Dragon”, which won the China gold award for industrial design, is the locomotive of Fuxing CR400AF EMU boasting a speed of 350 km per hour. As the train with the highest commercial operating speed in the world, the CR400AF is a main new-generation vehicle model of CRH.The “Flying Dragon” appearance is inspired by the image of “dragon”, the totem of the Chinese nation. The “Chinese red” ribbons revolving round the locomotive derive from the “dragon’s moustache”, looking vivid and graceful. The face, subject to golden section with knuckle line, appears robust and smooth and features exceptional sectional beauty with the aid of the design of “reversed arc concave surface”. The knuckle line with abundant layers, moving forward to switch on and off mechanism gathering, seems a bow well poised for shooting and is characterized by a remarkable sense of speed. The “Flying Dragon” locomotive, which boasts the interactive design of appearance and technology, is of high facial attractiveness and the optimal solution combining both appearance and performance. The actual railway test proves that the “Flying Dragon” displays an extraordinary aerodynamic performance. Specifically speaking, the running resistance for the entire vehicle, crosswind lift coefficient and aerodynamic noise level can reduce by 12 percent, 6 percent and 2dB(A) respectively. When it runs at the speed of 350 km per hour, the energy consumption per capita for every hundred kilometers can decrease by 17 percent, equivalent to over 5,000 kwh which can make a journey to and fro between Beijing and Shanghai.
