Rapeseed flowers are blooming in a township of Songzi City in central China's Hubei Province in autumn with customized technology that allows the flower to grow out of its usual season.Songzi's Weishui Township applied the advanced technology to achieve the rapeseed flower being harvestable all year round as long as normal weather conditions persist."This customized technology called 'Flower Sea for Four Seasons' can be used to bloom at any time as long as there are no extreme weather conditions. Without affecting the production of grain and oil, this landscape can be a perpetual flower sea," said Li Jun, deputy director of the Lab of Environmental Biology of Oil Crops Research Institute under Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.In 2020, Songzi City vigorously developed the oilseed industry, with an area of 20,000 hectares planted, driving more than 40,000 farmers in the city to increase their income."We are going to build the country's first rapeseed flower characteristic town. In recent years, we are preparing to further expand the cultivating area of it, which has now increased by 30,000 mu (about 2,000 hectares)," said Tang Jianping, the secretary of Weishui Township Committee of CPC.The rapeseed industry is a traditional dominant industry in Weishui Township, but in recent years, the output efficiency has been low, resulting in the decline of planting area to less than 666 hectares in 2018. The local government conducted a series of tests to find a solution to help break through the bottleneck of the industry."The net income of land per mu can earn 800 yuan (about 119.57 U.S. dollars) except the 200 yuan of seed cost," said Liu Shaorong, a villager of Mashatan Village of Weishui Township.Songzi introduced intensive processing with advanced technology content when developing the rapeseed industry, changed the traditional planting and processing mode to produce functional rapeseed oil and achieved sales growth in the market."Our best quality oil can be sold for about 200 yuan (about 30 U.S. dollars) per kilogram, and a large number of willing orders have now reached more than 20,000 jin (10,000 kilograms)," said Huang Niansong, the director of Weishui Rapeseed Oil Processing Plant.According to the development plan of the rape flower industry in Songzi City, the city's planting area will increase to more than 33,333 hectare by next year, with an output of more than 75,000 tons, and the output value of 59.78 million U.S. dollars.
