During the recent Chinese National Day holiday, nearly 1,000 famous watercolor artists from home and abroad gathered virtually in Qingdao, a city strongly attached to watercolor to present their art works under the theme of the city.
Their art works depict the mountains and seas, stylish scenes, urban development and humanity style. These celebrated artists who participated in the creation came from not only all Chinese provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR and Taiwan, but also over a dozen of countries including Britain, America, Russia, Belgium, Brazil, Australia, Moldova, Uruguay, Republic of Korea, Malaysia and India.
Against the backdrop of the regular epidemic control and prevention, the 2020 China Qingdao International Watercolor Art Season under the theme of “1,000 Celebrated Artists From Home and Abroad Co-paint A Fashionable Qingdao”, which was recently launched, had to give up the pattern of sketch from travelling around the city, instead collected works online, hosted exhibition activities of a few works offline in phases.
Out of the expectation of the organizer, no matter internationally renowned watercolor masters who participated all the time in the previous watercolor activities in Qingdao or watercolor enthusiasts who were informed of this urban activity for the first time were all in high spirits. Nearly 1,000 participants overcame physical barriers, demonstrated and disseminated the activity with the aid of many internet platforms including Wechat, community and Tiktok and launched a cross-time Qingdao-themed watercolor banquet targeting the public. For Qingdao and every artist who participated in the event, watercolor works were not the finishing point but served as a bridge. Artistic communication has built a stage facing the world. Blessed by watercolor and artists, urban images become more striking, vivid and attractive.
Daniel Marshall, an American painter, who attended the 2019 China (Qingdao) international watercolor art season and painted from life, had a watercolor-like impression of Qingdao, which he visited for the very first time. In his view, watercolor turns to depict momentary tranquility in noisy cities, resembles relaxing light music rich in poetic flavor and has the ability to arouse nostalgic feelings like pictures in classic films. The temperament of Qingdao and the unique expression of watercolor complement each other.
Indeed, the gathering of watercolor artists on the native land transmits the information that watercolor, as an art form, pervaded all over the city. From the sensational corner on the internet in the old town to villa clusters in Badaguan, from the Museum Of The Former German Governor’s House In Qingdao to Taipingjiao, Olympic Sailing Base, Laoshan fishing village and Liuqingwan, from the 1907 Bar Music Street to Qingdao Town in the West Coast New Area, this was the route of painting in the 2019 International Watercolor Art Season. As described by Herman Pekel, a watercolor master from Australia, they were crowded by learners with keen interest and young faces. It is amazing to find that many of them were kids. By contrast, watercolor learners in Europe are mostly retirees.
In the pictures of artists, Qingdao is a famous site for painting from nature, where scenery varies from place to place and lives up to the reputation of “a natural photostudio” in the film and TV industry while in the horizon of a city, what Qingdao beholds comprises not only colors and good graces on the color palette but also expectations for the city’s future out of the limit of the frame.
The 2020 China (Qingdao) International Watercolor Art Season has confirmed the intention of carrying out the watercolor art journey plan. The China (Qingdao) international watercolor art season which has been held for the 4th consecutive time, will be just a beginning. Therefore, when you come to Qingdao next time, don’t forget to bring your easel.
