The eastern coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong province aims to become a center of artificial intelligence (AI) development within the next five years, local authorities said.
The city recently launched an action plan to accelerate the integration of new-generation AI technologies with the real economy and fuel the high-quality development of the local economy.
According to the plan, the city will step up efforts to build new industrialization demonstration bases for the development of industrial internet and integrate AI with various fields, including healthcare, rail transportation and smart home.
The city plans to cultivate 10 influential leading domestic AI enterprises, build around 20 AI innovation platforms, form around 50 in-depth AI application scenarios, and build more than 100 AI application demonstration projects by 2022.
It aims to become a center of AI development at home and abroad with strong AI application and service industries by 2025.
Qingdao has been approved to build a national AI innovation application pilot area. The city also aims to become the world's industrial internet capital by advancing the transformation and upgrading of its manufacturing industry and fostering new economic growth drivers.
China has been promoting the integration of AI and the real economy as an important way to optimize and upgrade industries and improve quality of life, said industry insiders.
The scale of China's core AI industry hit 51 billion yuan ($7.5 billion) by the end of 2019, with the number of AI enterprises exceeding 2,600.
