Guangdong beat Zhejiang for 26th straight win to equal CBA record
QINGDAO, China, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Guangdong Southeast Tigers defeated Zhejiang Lions 104-97 in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) here on Thursday, equalling their own longest 26-game CBA winning streak set in the 2014-15 season.
Five years ago, Zhejiang put an end to Guangdong's record-winning streak with a 125-119 victory, but failed to repeat it again on Thursday as the defending champion led through the entire game.
Yi Jianlian scored nine points to help Guangdong lead 32-25 in the opening quarter before the Tigers kept a six-point advantage into the half break 55-49. Guangdong then extended their lead to 86-75 in the third quarter thanks to 12 points from Sonny Weems.
With five minutes left in the final period, Li Jinglong hit two consecutive 3-pointers as the Lions geared up to cut the deficit to 92-91, but Guangdong held out the challenges to seal the victory.
Weems had a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds for Guangdong, while Yi scored five out of seven baskets to contribute 16 points and 12 rebounds. Guangdong outrebounded Zhejiang 57-48.
All five starters scored double digits for the Lions, including 20 points from Liu Zheng and 19 points from Sun Minghui.
The nine-time title winners are scheduled to meet Zhejiang Golden Bulls on Monday hoping to break the record, while the Lions will play against Shenzhen Aviators on Sunday.
