The value of “East” Qingdao
The city’s growth and development in the past 40 years can be reflected in the evolution of the discourse system of Qingdao citizens. The “East” was a word that had been endowed with new meanings in the 1990s. It means fashion and vitality. Here are men and women wearing beautiful and stylish clothes as well as the most glaring light in the evening. It is a most flourishing aspect of the city.
These young white collars who are working diligently in a continuous row of office buildings in the “East” probably don’t know that the land under their feet used to be farmland over 20 years ago.
The decision of “speeding up the development and construction of the east city” has lifted Qingdao out of the shackles from the old town and made the step to construct a larger Qingdao. Exceedingly unimaginable ripples are generated by the pebbles thrown into the sea, the farmland has given way to prosperity, the development path of the city has never been so breathtaking and inspiring, the seemingly “thrilling leap” served as an initiative of the city’s burgeoning growth and remarkable elevation.
However, nowadays Qingdao citizens no longer call the “East” the new town. Choosing the east as origin of coordinates, Qingdao is breaking out of the west and expanding towards the north with a more confident and deliberate galloping manner. As a result, the city’s energy level is continuously improving.
These who are observant and conscientious have probably discovered the connotation of the “East” has changed unconsciously. No matter it is business domain, industrial pattern or vigorous scenes of life, the “East” is no longer appreciating the moonlight alone. Instead, all over the city is as splendid and starry as the Milky Way.
Qingdao bridge and tunnel shorten the distance of time and space
Take a big boat, vacillating and staggering. Put down a plank on the rail and get onto the shore. Over ten years ago, almost all those who often came back and forth Qingdao and Huangdao had the experience of turbulent and jolty “boating” in Jiaozhou Bay.
From June 30th, 2011 on, the distance of time and space among Qingdao, Huangdao and Hongdao has utterly changed by a 36.48km long cross-sea bridge and an 82.81m long submarine tunnel under the sea level. Although the bridge and tunnel are just two curves on the map of Qingdao, the increasingly closer geographic distance is a significant stride that will influence the future structure of Qingdao.
Hence, all these are far from enough.
In Qingdao, the first submarine tunnel for metro has been completed and intelligent transportation is also redefining “go out and travel”.
Qingdao citizens walking on the path understand the so-called future is not just reaching a certain destination but creating another meandering distance place.
