New Year's Eve atmosphere in Shantou, Guangdong!

Art and culture | On 17 February (the eighth day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar), the Yuepu community in #Shantou held an annual traditional folk event where farmers competed to determine who has raised the biggest #pig. According to the village #custom, young men who have reached the age of 24 will hold a bar mitzvah on this day.

At 5:00 a.m. on that day, the event venue was crowded with people, and the selected young men erected pigs on special wooden frames with #oranges in pigs’ mouths to signify good luck, and red "Xi" characters on pigs’ backs. And some big pigs had a #lamb stacked on their backs to pray for happiness. #artandculture

2月17日（农历正月初八），汕头市月浦社区举行一年一度的传统民俗活动“赛大猪”，按照村里习俗，年满24岁（23周岁）的男青年在这一天被赋予“丁头”之称，并“贺丁头”（潮汕话，即当地的一种成人仪式）。

当天凌晨五点，“赛大猪”现场人山人海，“丁头”人家在村里太保爷宫前用特制的木架架起大猪，猪的嘴巴里含着桔子，寓意大吉大利，背上贴着红色的“喜”字，有些大猪背上还叠上一只小羊，俗称“全副猪羊”，祈求幸福安康。
