A mesmerizing sea of clouds appeared at the Laojieling Scenic Area in central China's Henan Province on Sunday, drawing the attention and awe of mountain-top visitors.
Following a period of rain, massive waves of mist swirled and surged over the mountain range. From hillside observation decks, tourists watched as towering peaks emerged and vanished within the rising clouds, sometimes revealing sharp, rocky outlines, and other times swallowed completely in soft white fog.
Gentle breezes caused the clouds to shift rhythmically, continuously reshaping the silhouette of the distant mountains in a dreamlike display.
As the skies cleared, visitors eagerly lifted smartphones and cameras to record the fleeting beauty from lookout points.
Located at the heart of the Funiu Mountain UNESCO Global Geopark, Laojieling is a biogeographical crossroads, the dividing line between China's north and south climates, as well as the Yangtze River and Yellow River basins. Its highest peak, Jijiaojian, rises to 2,222.5 meters above sea level.
The region is known for its dramatic peaks, lush forests, and seasonal seas of clouds. During autumn, wider temperature changes between day and night, along with heavier moisture in the air, significantly increase the likelihood of cloud formations.
