On the evening of July 12, the 360°panoramic show Qingdao by the Sea , the first large-scale outdoor performance show in Qingdao, was premiered in the Phoenix Island Art Center in the West Coast New Area of Qingdao.
When the night fell, the performance began and all three audience areas were fully occupied. Performers came on stage from the sea. What came into the views of audiences was nothing else but a vast span of blue and fantastic seas. Thanks to a LED display covering an area of more than 1,000 square meters, the profound history and culture of Qingdao seemed to cross the time and unfolded in front of audiences amid sea wave sounds. While the plot moved forward, audiences became immersed into such historical scenes as the bustling Shi Bo Si (Maritime Trade Commission), fishing villages filled with human touch and gigantic warships adorned with fluttering flags. When the story was about to conclude, a group of UAVs soared to the sky and constituted the shape of a roc (an enormous legendary bird transformed from a gigantic fish), then appeared to be the milky way to present at a slow speed the topic of the performance “Hai Shang You Qing Dao” (Qingdao by the Sea). A warm applause burst out.
Underpinned by a more than millennia of history of Shandong Province, the show Qingdao by the Sea used “vessels” as visual tools and cultural images so that audiences could imagine the sea as comfortably as possible. Super simulation-based scene experience and ultra-stereoscopic visual perception were employed to restore historical scenes. Moreover, magnificent scenes and world outlook were adopted to introduce the development history of Qingdao, a city which has emerged, gained a foothold and is thriving due to the proximity to the sea.
Cutting-edge technology and traditional concepts collided in the show. Noteworthy was the world’s first super gigantic cyclic mechanic stage with a diameter of 120 meters, coupled with a fully penetrative water circulation system, super simulation of sea waves, a super-sized display with ambiophonic sound effects, a digital-real integration (DRI)-based boundless and transparent three-dimensional space, holographic imaging, and waterborne stereoscopic 360° rotable spectator seats providing immersive experience. All these constitute a unique show arena, which boasts disruptive technologies.
