A diverse selection of charming homestays and hotel resorts dot the beaches of Hainan, driving tourism revenues in China's southernmost island province.
Warm weather and clear waters are just part of what lures travelers to the island. In Wenchang city, the chance to see a rocket take to the sky from the city's spacecraft launch site attracts no shortage of stargazers, and villagers are happy to accommodate them in special guest houses that line the coast.
Between 2022 and 2023, the Wenchang Launch Site conducted 10 rocket launches, attracting more than 590,000 tourists to the city. Statistics show that young people born in the 1980s and 1990s are the main consumers of aerospace-themed guesthouses, and more than 60 percent of the orders come from online booking platforms.
In Bozong, a fishing village where beachside hotels and inns offer visitors fascinating ocean views, many travelers come to search the sand for interesting shells or small marine animals, a recreational practice called beachcombing.
"It's very convenient to go beachcombing here, and the scenery is amazing. We can also watch the sunrise and catch some small crabs while we stay here," said Wang Zimo, a tourist.
Near the island's magnificent Wuzhi Mountain, or Five-Finger Mountain, the village of Shuimanxia attracts numerous visitors interested in its rainforest landscape. That has also given a boost to the village's local tea industry.
Meanwhile, Bohou Village in the tropical city of Sanya features stunning beaches, picturesque mountains, and charming accommodation facilities for tourists from across the world.
"The homestay in Bohou Village of Sanya is very stylish now. It's a must-visit destination for visitors," said a tourist surnamed Zhuo.
The village also launched new tourist attractions this year such as a bustling night market packed with all kinds of retail booths to increase villagers' income.
"There are now 64 unique homestays in the village, offering more than 2,000 beds. Last year, we had 830,000 tourists stay overnight in the village, generating 170 million yuan (about 23 million U.S. dollars) in revenue and creating jobs for 600 villagers. We also saw a significant increase in the number of South Korean and Russian tourists last year, so we are becoming more and more international," said Hu Kui, secretary of Bohou Village Party Committee.
