China's movie market generated a total box office revenue of 463 million yuan (64.73 million U.S. dollars) over the past week, according to data provided by China Central Television's Movie Channel.
The crime triller film "Across the Furious Sea", starring award-winning actor Huang Bo and internationally renowned actress Zhou Xun, topped the chart with a successful opening weekend, earning 176 million yuan. It proved to be the strongest new release in the New Year holiday season (from late November to early March next year).
"Who's The Suspect", a suspense crime film directed by Zhang Mo, secured the second place with 60.5 million yuan, accumulating a total box office of 550 million yuan in its 26-day run.
"Beyond the Clouds", a biopic based on the true story of Zhang Guimei, an exemplary educator in southwest China's Yunnan Province, claimed the third spot with 39.32 million yuan, while "Seven Killings", a spy thriller adapted from award-winning novelist Mai Jia's best-selling novel of the same title, closely followed with 35.94 million yuan, securing the fourth place.
The fifth spot was taken by "Crayon Shinchan the Movie: Battle of Supernatural Powers", a new movie of the enduring Japanese manga and animation series Crayon Shinchan, with 33.73 million yuan.
The Chinese film market crossed the 50-billion-yuan mark in 2023 revenue on Nov 14, data from the National Film Fund Office showed.
The impressive feat, accomplished in 317 days, saw domestic productions generate 83.4 percent of the total box office earnings.
All 10 of the highest-grossing titles were Chinese productions led by the historical comedy thriller "Full River Red", sci-fi blockbuster "The Wandering Earth II", and crime drama "No More Bets".
