Beijing's expanding greenways enhance cycling experience across city 发布日期:2024/9/23 来源:International Daily 打印

Beijing is accelerating its efforts to become a bike-friendly city, with a sprawling network of greenways that offer cycling enthusiasts fresh air and diverse scenic routes for a healthier and more enjoyable ride.

A riverside greenway winds through the heart of Xicheng District, where authorities have removed some illegal structures and converted them into green spaces for residents. Apart from pedestrian pathways, there are dedicated bicycle lanes flanked by lush trees and clear waters, offering cyclists a chance to embrace the urban beauty while pedaling safely.
Another highlight of the greenway network is the Dongba Country Park in suburban Chaoyang District. This park features nearly 40 kilometers of exclusive cycling trails through the forest, which are off-limits to electric and motor vehicles. Cyclists can navigate through dense woods and vibrant flowerbeds, enjoying close interaction with the nature.
In addition, six nearby parks have had their fences removed, creating an interconnected "boundary-free" park cluster. This integration ensures seamless greenways and uninterrupted cycling paths.
"In the past, there were high fences around the parks, requiring residents to walk over 400 meters to get home. We have removed all these barriers and added passable greenways. Now residents can walk just over 100 meters after getting off the bus to reach home," said Yang Ying, deputy director of Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau Haidian Branch.
"It's incredibly comfortable to walk down the greenway. It's so convenient now. I' very happy," said Sun Chengxiu, a resident.
In Tongzhou District, a cycling greenway running alongside the Grand Canal is also popular with cyclists. The well-paved road is lined with beautiful wetlands bursting with wildlife. Riders can also access nearby forest parks which feature various sports facilities including tennis courts and basketball courts.
The total length of greenways at all levels exceeds 3,800 kilometers across Beijing, more than the distance cycling from Beijing to Lhasa City in the far-flung Xizang.
According to a plan released in May, the Chinese capital city aims to build a greenway network covering over 5,000 km by 2035, offering residents more green spaces within easier reach.
Under the plan, over 2,000 km of city-level greenways will be available by 2035, connecting over 5,000 residential areas, some 780 villages, more than 460 tourist attractions and parks and about 460 historical and cultural resources, among other locations.
