Expressway service areas across China are transforming into vibrant destinations, offering a diverse range of activities including RV camping, culinary delights and cultural showcases, attracting millions of tourists during the summer vacation.

Service areas are so common that people barely notice them until they need to refuel or simply take a nap. But these pit stops are getting a major upgrade, with some unveiling special travel routes and affordable travel products in partnership with nearby scenic spots to stimulate tourist consumption.

Located in central China's Henan Province, Luhun Service Area allows travelers to stroll along the waterside boardwalk, enjoy the beautiful sunset and savor fish dishes beside a reservoir.

"The service area is beautiful, and the reservoir nearby is also beautiful. We took many photos here," said Quan Shuang, one of the visitors.

Taking advantage of its close proximity to the majestic Laojun Mountain and Baiyun Mountain, the Luhun Service Area has prepared jet skis and boats for adventurous travelers. It has also launched programs with many tourist attractions, allowing travelers to enjoy more affordable trips, which has seen room in the service area fully booked during summer holiday.

"The service area receives over 13,000 people per day, up by over 30 percent year-on-year. It also receives an average of more than 4,000 vehicles each day. The revenue from the service area has increased by 10 percent compared with the same period last year," said Ge Changbo, manager of the Luhun Service Area.

In addition to natural views, some service areas are providing travelers with a unique cultural experience.

After a two-month upgrading, the Huanglishu Service Area, located in Nanjing City of east China's Jiangsu Province, has become a place with elements belonging to China's Minguo Era (1912-1949). After entering the service area hall, visitors are taken back to the streets of old Nanjing, almost a century ago.

The service area is also offering some culinary delights, with over 50 dishes of tasty Nanjing cuisine. It is also showcasing "Minguo-style" clothes, and other distinctive products to boost tourism consumption.

"The new service area provide visitors with fresh experience after the upgrading," said Shen Honglan, director from the Huanglishu Service Area.
