China's one-year trial policy, which unilaterally granted visa-free entry to citizens of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay, boosted flows of people and business from the five Latin American countries.

From June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026 when the policy was valid, 81,000 nationals from the five countries entered China through Shanghai, up 50.5 percent year on year, according to data from the Shanghai General Station of Immigration Inspection.

Nearly 70 percent of them entered Shanghai with the visa-free policy, which became a strong driving force for the local tourism market.
"It's faster for us. And when you decide to come from Brazil to here to work, we just buy a ticket and come. And it was very good for us, the facility, the fastness and everything," said a Brazilian businesswoman who works in the fashion industry.

"[I've been] to China like more than 20 times already. I always have so much fun and I love the food, I love the people. It's almost my second home, China," said another Brazilian citizen.

Brazil's businesspeople said that from posts on the country's social media platforms, they could sense that the visa-free policy brought increasingly close commercial contacts with China.

Nationals carrying ordinary passports from the five countries were granted visa-free entry into China, according to the policy, which applied to those visiting for purposes such as business, tourism, family visits, exchange visits or transiting. The visa-free stay was limited to 30 days.
More than 200 enterprises from Latin America, including over 100 from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay, exhibited their products at the eighth China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai from Nov. 5 to 10, 2025.
