The panda pig-themed expressway service area in Jinhua City of east China's Zhejiang Province has seen its customers staying longer for its provision of refreshing environment and delicious specialty food, and thus earned better revenues.
That's especially obvious during the eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, which entered its fifth day on Sunday.
The daily number of vehicles entering and exiting the service area has doubled compared to regular days, reaching over 20,000 each day.
The expressway service area combines leisure activities, dining, and cultural displays, marking a distinct change from conventional highway rest stops.
It has added activities for the customers including interactions with two two-end black pigs, or panda pigs, for their black heads and hindquarters.
As one of China's top pig breeds with top-notch meat quality, the species has been bred in Jinhua for over 1,700 years.
"I think the supporting services here are very thoughtful in various aspects. Particularly there are real panda pigs, and my kid has great fun. This is definitely one of the best service areas I've ever been to," said a tourist named Su Xiaochen.
The largest crowds were seen at the dining area, with local specialty food including Xiaolongbao, or steamed soup dumplings, filled with meat of panda pigs.
"We built up this expressway service area from Version 1.0 to present Version 3.0. The average staying time of guests in the service area has extended from 15 minutes to 40 minutes. That truly helps us achieve a double harvest in traffic scale and economic benefit," said Shao Qian, manager of the service area from Zhejiang Communications Investment Group Co., Ltd.
