Families are choosing to get out the house and embrace various leisure activities during the Spring Festival in Zhengzhou City of central China's Henan Province, with some choosing a bit of light reading at book cafes while others look to let off some steam at indoor sports centers.
The Spring Festival holiday, which centers around the Chinese New Year, runs from Feb. 10 to 17 this year, and while many have enjoyed family reunions and mouthwatering meals, many are now looking for other fun ways to spend the eight-day-long holiday.
One popular choice to unwind is to pick up a book and grab a hot drink at one of the many book cafes across Zhengzhou, where students and young children accompanied by their parents have been drawn to enjoy reading while occasionally sipping on their drinks.
Though many are enjoying a relaxing time away from the pressures of school, one youngster said he is keen to keep on learning more.
"I came here to acquire more knowledge about a variety of disciplines. In the future, this will help me in job hunting and studying. Actually, reading is one of the ways to relax," said Li Haoyang, a student.
The sudden popularity of this pastime is good news for Zhang Jiye, head of the book cafe, who said his business has seen the total number of customers more than double during the Spring Festival holiday.
"In normal days, we typically receive merely around 700 customer visits [each day] during mid-week, while the same period of the Spring Festival Holiday sees as high as about 2,000 to 2,500 customer visits each day," said Zhang.
Another holiday hotspot in Zhengzhou are the city's indoor playgrounds which have enticed flocks of visitors of all ages to try out a host of sports activities such as archery and indoor basketball.
"During the Spring Festival, we usually spend most of our time sitting and rarely move around. So, I seized the day to go out and do some physical exercise here," said Feng Tianqi, a customer.
"Now, the visitor flow is three to five times larger than usual. Normally, people are busy working, but the Spring Festival holiday gives them the opportunity to stay with their children and other family members. For this reason, we see a larger number of customers come along with their families," said Cao Lina, head of a Zhengzhou-based indoor playground.
The demand for activities and emphasis on fitness has also seen sports equipment stores in Zhengzhou embracing a hot holiday season, with some businesses reporting a more than 50 percent increase in sales.
