MEXICO CITY, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Colombia defender Cristian Borja has suffered a knee ligament injury ahead of next month's FIFA World Cup, Club America said.

The 33-year-old sustained the injury during America's 3-3 home draw with Pumas UNAM in their Liga MX quarterfinal first leg on Sunday.

"Club America reports that its player Cristian Borja suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee," the Mexico City club said in a brief statement. "His recovery time will depend on his progress."

Borja has been capped nine times for Colombia since making his international debut in 2018 and has not featured for the national team in almost a year.

Colombia will begin its World Cup campaign against Uzbekistan in Mexico City on June 17 before facing DR Congo in Guadalajara on June 23 and Portugal in Miami on June 27.
