MEXICO CITY, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Mexico international winger Alexis Vega converted the decisive spot kick as Toluca clinched back-to-back Liga MX titles on Sunday by beating Tigres UANL 9-8 on penalties.
Fernando Gorriaran struck early at Toluca's Nemesio Diez stadium to give Tigres UANL a 2-0 lead on aggregate in the Apertura final. But Toluca leveled the tie through goals either side of halftime from Helinho and Paulinho.
Thirty minutes of extra time failed to break the deadlock as the match went to a shootout.
Both sides converted eight of their first nine attempts before Toluca's Luis Garcia saved consecutive attempts from goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman and Argentine winger Angel Correa.
Vega then sent Guzman the wrong way as Toluca celebrated its 12th Mexican top-flight title.
