Patryk Rombel sacked as Poland's handball coach 2023/2/8 source: Print

WARSAW, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Patryk Rombel's contact with the Poland men's handball team will not be extended due to unsatisfied performance at the 2023 International Handball Federation World Championship, the Polish Handball Association (ZPRP) announced on Tuesday morning.

Rombel stayed in charge from February 2019, with the main objective of preparing the team for the world championship, as Poland co-organized the tournament which was played in January 2023. The co-hosts did not meet the expectations with a 15th place finish.

On Monday the board of the ZPRP summed up Rombel's work on the bench and they decided to sack the coach.

"We appreciate the work, effort and involvement of the coach in building a new strong team. However, in sport the result is always the most important thing and we missed that," president of ZPRP was quoted as saying by the official site of the association.

"It (to work with the national team) was a great honor and distinction for me. I believe that as a coach I have not yet said the last word and in the future I will take up new challenges, including those that contribute to the development of Polish handball," Rombel claimed.

According to Polish media, Marcin Lijewski is a favorite to take over the national team.
