RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Former Brazil international center-back Gil struck early as Corinthians clinched a 1-0 home victory over Estudiantes in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana quarterfinal on Tuesday.

Gil timed his run to perfection to meet a Matias Rojas corner at the far post and thump a first-time volley into the roof of the net.

The return leg will be played in the Argentine city of La Plata next Tuesday (Aug. 29).

In other Copa Sudamericana quarter-final first leg fixtures this week, Botafogo are at home to Defensa y Justicia on Wednesday while LDU Quito will host Sao Paulo and America Minero will welcome Fortaleza on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Botafogo are due to host Defensa y Justicia at home while LDU Quito and Sao Paulo, and Americas Mineiro will be at home to Fortaleza on Thursday.
