China's aviation soars in spring boom as flower-viewing tourism fuels off-peak travel surge 2025/4/3 source: International Daily Print

China's aviation market has seen booming development so far in the current spring season, fueled by surging tourism demand that makes the typically off-peak season much busier.

As many places across China are in the season of dazzling blooms, searches related to "flower viewing" on online platforms have surged by 50 percent year on year.
The strong demand for spring outings has sustained air travel growth, with the number of passenger trips reaching 1.26 billion in the first two months of the year, a 5.5-percent increase compared with the same period of last year.
Off-peak travel trends have become increasingly popular among travelers this year.
"We are heading to Sanya. Traveling now is both convenient and cost-effective," said a traveler.
So far in March, the domestic aviation sector has seen remarkable growth, with over 280,000 flights and 36.48 million passenger trips, according to data from the flight travel app Umetrip.
Popular destinations like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Kunming recorded high ticket demand, while famed scenic areas such as Xishuangbanna and Dali in southwest China's Yunnan have seen bookings soar by over 50 percent.
"t reflects from a certain perspective the gratifying trend of government efforts to support travels and expand the cultural and tourism markets. We are seeing many policies gradually delivering results. We are also seeing that consumers are increasingly opting for off-peak travel, as off-peak travel can give them a better experience," said Qi Qi, an expert with the High-quality Development Research Center of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).
The boom has prompted airlines and airports to respond swiftly. Key air routes, such as the Beijing-Xi'an and Shenzhen-Xi'an ones, reported double-digit passenger trip growth, while routes between Chengdu-Xishuangbanna and Chengdu-Shenzhen have each added more than 10 flights daily to accommodate the surging demand.
As the April 5 Tomb-Sweeping Day and May Day holidays approach, airlines are increasing capacity in popular destinations such as Yunnan, Hainan, Shaanxi, and Guizhou to meet the rising demand.
"So far, domestic airline ticket bookings for the Tomb-Sweeping Festival holiday season have surpassed 1.75 million, up 12 percent from the previous year. Generally speaking, the travel demand is much stronger than previous years," said Wang Diansheng, a data expert with Umetrip.
In addition to expanding capacity, airports are upgrading their infrastructure and services. Smart check-in systems and automated baggage handling have been introduced to improve efficiency, while runways, aprons, and terminals are being enhanced to deliver a better travel experience.
