China has been seeing a box office boom this summer with the release of several high-profile blockbusters drawing out more and more film fans who are keen to enjoy spectacular visual-effects and an enhanced overall movie-viewing experience in theaters across the country.

The summer box office season in China, which officially runs from June 1 to Aug 31, is seen as one of the most lucrative periods of the year, and has spurred a significant upgrade in moviegoing consumption with several new films hitting screens.

Premium formats such as IMAX and Dolby Cinema, which maximize the films' visual impact, have become the top choice for cinemagoers looking for the maximum impact from their chosen movies.

IMAX cinemas, known for their massive curved screens which feature high-resolution images and powerful customized sound, are also the popular viewing medium for this summer's major releases. This includes the Chinese anti-war film "Once Upon a Time in the Middle East", which is set in Chinese restaurant in a war-torn Middle East country, and the big budget fantasy film "The Odyssey" based on the epic Greek poem of the same name.

Demand for these premium-format screenings continues to surge across China, such as in Shenyang City of the northeastern Liaoning Province.

The IMAX GT screen, located at the Liaoning Science and Technology Museum in the city, stretches almost 30 meters wide and stands 22 meters tall. It is engineered to showcase the complete '1.43:1' aspect ratio with no cropping, while the theater also features a 12-channel audio system that produces a more spatially rich sound experience.

The combination of sharper visuals and the deeper immersion offered here has drawn large numbers of film enthusiasts to travel specifically to the museum for screenings.

"It makes me feel more immersed. The screen is bigger, so the impact is much stronger," said a moviegoer.

"When we watch movies, we tend to go for 3D or IMAX," said another.

"I find watching movies in this theater absolutely breathtaking. The screen is enormous. It's an experience I simply can't get at any other cinema," said another film fan.

With the stunning visuals from "The Odyssey" brought to life through IMAX, data shows that since the film's release on Friday, average attendance rates in IMAX theaters have exceeded 95 percent.
