The 50th Buenos Aires International Book Fair opened on Thursday with an event dedicated to Chinese literature, highlighting the growing cultural and literary exchanges between China and Argentina.
The event included discussions on contemporary Chinese literature, translation into Spanish, and intercultural communication.
With the participation of prominent writers, poets, translators and academics from both countries, the event emphasized the growing literary exchange between the two nations.
Sun Xintang, an expert in literary exchanges between China and Latin America, highlighted the importance of the fair for China’s literary world.
"The fair is very influential in China, and is well-known. It’s a place that many authors seek out and aspire to attend. Many Chinese publishers want to come to present their own works and productions, but they also want to exchange ideas. So, in this regard, I hope that more and more Chinese authors, publishers and academics will come to the fair to build even more bridges for communication," said Sun Xintang, director of the Latin American Studies Center at the Beijing Language and Culture University.
The China pavilion displays over 600 titles and more than 1,000 copies that systematically present China's development concepts, the spirit of the times and its cultural richness, as well as advances in publishing, academic research and international projection.
"Spanish-speaking readers can discover a fascinating world in Chinese literature, as Chinese literature opens the door to a wealth of knowledge about a culture, a history and a society that are distant and different to us. Literature provides a possible approach. Many Chinese authors open the door to let people know about Chinese history with a joyful, humorous and fictional narrative, making cultural exchanges more colorful," said Lelia Gandara, a professor at the University of Buenos Aires.
The Buenos Aires International Book Fair is the largest, oldest and most influential international publishing event in the Spanish-speaking world.
It will run through May 11.
