China's railways will operate an average of about 13,000 passenger trains per day during the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, the country's railway operator said on Wednesday in its newly released transportation plan for the holidays.

This year's travel period for the two holidays will run for 16 days, from September 23 to October 8, with October 1 expected to be the busiest day, according to the plan.

Tickets for September 23 went on sale on Wednesday, 15 days before departure.

Measures will be taken to ensure transport capacity during the holidays, including adding extra overnight bullet and sleeper trains, and attaching additional carriages to already scheduled trains.

More efforts will be made to dynamically adjust service plans and maximize capacity on popular routes.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the night when the moon reaches its fullest and brightest on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese traditional calendar, symbolizing family reunion. The festival falls on Sept 25 this year.

China's National Day holiday, an annual seven-day public holiday running from Oct 1 to Oct 7, is known as the Golden Week, during which a large number of Chinese people travel around the country.
