LOS ANGELES — Continuing the state’s aggressive push to transition Californians off the streets and into specialized care, Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the groundbreaking of the Los Angeles County Care Community.
The project, fueled by a $65 million investment from Proposition 1’s Behavioral Health Infrastructure Bond Act, will transform six vacant state-owned buildings into a unified, state-of-the-art behavioral health campus. Once complete, the site will provide 162 beds dedicated to both mental health treatment and supportive housing.
The Los Angeles County Care Community is a cornerstone of the Governor’s Mental Health for All initiative. By repurposing underutilized state assets, the project addresses the urgent need for local infrastructure that integrates housing with clinical recovery services.
This groundbreaking follows a string of significant milestones in California’s strategy to overhaul its behavioral health system:
· Statewide Funding: The announcement comes on the heels of $291 million in funding released earlier this week for housing and behavioral health services across the state.
· Proven Progress: Recent data shows a 9% decrease in unsheltered homelessness across California, signaling that the state’s "housing first, but not housing alone" approach is gaining momentum.
· Proposition 1 Impact: This project represents one of the first major deployments of the Behavioral Health Infrastructure Bond Act, designed to build a modern network of care for those with the most acute needs.
The Los Angeles County Care Community will serve as a model for future developments, combining residential stability with on-site professional care to break the cycle of homelessness and hospitalization.
