QINGDAO -- The 2024 China International Ocean Underwater Robot Competition in Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province, highlighted cutting-edge underwater robotics and showcased talented young innovators from across the country.
The two-day event, which concluded on Saturday, was centered around the theme 'Embracing the Ocean, Intelligence Leads the Future'.
Nearly 300 young participants from over 35 universities and nine primary and secondary schools competed in six categories: Creative, Sci-Fi, Simulation, AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle), ROV (remotely operated vehicle), and Industry.
"We identify talent through competition, and focus on nurturing their development," said Pan Xinchun, vice chairman and secretary general of China Oceanic Development Foundation.
The competition was intense and demanding, requiring participants to navigate their robots through challenging tasks and showcase their skills under time pressure.
Jin Xianglong, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, highlighted the broader goals of the event.
"Through this competition, we hope to uncover emerging innovations that could develop into new quality productive forces and ultimately integrate into industry," Jin said.
Students described the competition as a valuable opportunity to test their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.
"I want to gain more hands-on experience. This competition is at a high level. I see it as a great opportunity to put my theoretical knowledge to the test," said Jia Xiaofei, an Ocean University of China student.
The event highlighted advancements in underwater robotics and provided valuable opportunities for participants. Award-winning students will have the chance to engage in scientific research initiatives, including marine exploration projects with top research organizations.
Furthermore, top innovations will be presented to venture capital firms and investors, helping to turn these innovations into tangible outcomes.
