Dragon Boat crews have taken to the water across China, getting in to shape for the traditional races that are held during the upcoming Dragon Boat or Duanwu Festival.
Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth Chinese lunar month, the festival honors the life and legacy of the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan.
On Wuchanggang River, Zhejiang Province, the Dragon Boats skimmed across the water to the accompaniment of beating drums, whose rhythm helped competitors paddle in perfect unison.
"The Dragon Boat race embodies the spirit of hard work and progress. I hope more young people will participate and excel in rowing the Dragon Boat," said Qian Huadong, team leader of the Qiantang Dragon Boat team.
After the race, a grand feast was served on tables lining up for 100 meters, wishing for good harvests.
"Bless our country and our people, and may all residents be safe and prosperous. This tradition must continue as it represents Chinese culture," said Zhang Jianfang, president of the Yuhang Wuchang Dragon Boat Association.
In Guangdong Province, exciting races attracted tourists from near and far.
On the Moyang River in Yangchun City, 24 Dragon Boat teams from across the province gathered to compete. The splashing waves, flying dragon flags, drums, and shouts created a thrilling scene.
"I am very happy to be in Yangchun to watch the Dragon Boat race today. I am thrilled by the contestants' drums and the excitement of the scene," said Li, a tourist.
In Pingsha Town, Zhuhai City, a Dragon Boat Festival carnival featured eight Dragon Boat teams racing on the Pingtang River, riding the wind and waves and presenting a spectacular sporting and cultural event for residents and tourists alike.
