Silk fabric manufacturers in China are gaining steam to meet the surging demand for the products in the market.
Zheng Jing has engaged in the silk industry for 32 years. He said the biggest trouble for him now is the tight supply of silk fabrics.
"It is difficult to buy even one meter of the best products. Last year, we bought 30 million yuan (about 4.15 million U.S. dollars) to 50 million yuan (about 6.92 million U.S. dollars) worth of products and this year, we will take at least 100 million yuan (about 13.83 million U.S. dollars) worth of silk. Price has risen by 5 percent this year, but it is acceptable," he said.
Zheng said that this year, the market share of various top-end silk fabrics is rapidly increasing.
To pander to the soaring demand, he has to place orders once a month now compared to once half a year in the past.
Silk processing factories are busy fulfilling orders, buying extra machines and operating around the clock.
"In fact, by the end of last year, we had been fully booked for this year. Consumers will snap up 200 meters or 300 meters of our products on line in seconds," said Bao Qiaomei, general manager of Dingsheng Silk Co., Ltd in Suzhou.
In the first quarter, sales of 50 sample silk enterprises in the country hit 919 million yuan (more than 127 million U.S. dollars), a climb of 10 percent year on year, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
