SHENZHEN has recently opened 43 road sections, totaling 106 kilometers, to enhance the real-world testing of autonomous driving systems, according to a release from the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau yesterday.

With these additions, the city’s total network for autonomous driving now spans 944 kilometers, including 67 kilometers of expressways and highways. The new sections are located in key areas such as the Bao’an CBD, Xin’an and Shajiang subdistricts, and near the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center.

In 2023, Shenzhen unveiled a professional test site for intelligent connected vehicles in Pingshan District, marking the first of its kind in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Bao’an District initiated a pilot program for the commercial use of intelligent autonomous vehicles in January, becoming the first central urban area in China to undertake such a trial.

As of 2023, the transport bureau had issued a total of 700 permits for intelligent autonomous vehicle tests.
